Linux Transition Checklist
I’m tired of using Windows at home, and it’s time to switch over to Linux. I’ve had the same Windows installation for about 3 years and I’ve been able to keep it running smoothly this whole time. However, it’s finally slowing down and getting to the point where it’s not worth it to keep maintaining it. I’m going to buy a new system and switch 100% to Linux at home. I’ve toyed around with Linux for quite a while, but I’ve never been able to do the full switch. I understand now that the only way this is going to happen is if I give up convenient access to some things, like games.
So for right now I’ll be building a list of essential Windows programs that need Linux replacements. This list isn’t really complete yet.
- Itunes -> Amarok: I will be able to control my music with my phone.
- Peerguardian -> MoBlock: I need a way to download torrents somewhat safely.
- zplayer with combined Community codec pack -> (?): I watch a lot of things with subtitles, and I want to make sure they look good.
- BlackBerry Desktop Manager -> (?)
- Launchy -> (?)
There are some programs I’ll just have to use with vmware or wine:
- Office: I hate OpenOffice, simple as that.
- Adobe CS3
- FL Studio
- Reason

Launchy -> Gnome Launch Box
You should add BlackBerry Desktop Manager to your “have to use with vmware” list. There is no version for Linux and RIM has consistently refused to change that. If all you need is sync capabilities, check this out. For backups though, I wouldn’t feel comfortable with anything except software from RIM.
