Switching to Wordpress
August 3rd, 2007
That’s it, I got tired of Joomla. I’ve been using it for quite a while and it takes SOOOOO much effort to get it to work like a normal site. I’ve had to install plugins to get the menu working right, to have search engine friendly links, for comments, etc. This frustration comes as I just got really good at working with it. It’s good for a company website, but it’s just not suitable for blogging.
I was feeling a little down about having to do research on blogging tools and having to change the way I work. The decision came down to either Wordpress or Movable Type, but then I found out that MT uses Perl (!). What decided it for me was this page: http://www.ndesign-studio.com/blog/wordpress/best-wordpress-sites. I’m definitely switching to Wordpress.
Update: Interesting… Anil Dash from the Movable Type team responded to this post. Click on the comments link.

Hi, I work with the Movable Type team, and I’m curious about what helped you make your decision, if you don’t mind sharing. I see that you’ve got some concerns with Perl, but if you had an explanation of what you mean there, I’d love to know more about it. For what it’s worth, MT does also have an option to publish your site using PHP and Smarty templates, and that’s built right in. as far as a list of sites using MT, you might want to check out the blogs on the Washington Post or the Huffington Post. Or Time magazine or BoingBoing or Jason Kottke or Instapundit or Rocketboom or Ze Frank or Lifehacker or Dooce or Make magazine or GM’s blogs or… well, I could go on.

When I investigated MT I really liked it. I wanted to switch to it, but right as I was about to do it I found the chart at this page: http://asymptomatic.net/blogbreakdown.htm My decision was based on how much time I thought I was going to have to spend migrating from Joomla - wanted to be able to do it in one day (that didn’t work out). I’m not sure if I have Perl installed on my server and I didn’t want to spend time to find out and install it. I also found a migration tool from Joomla to WP - I didn’t find anything like that for MT. And lastly, since WP has been open source longer than MT and since it has a bigger market share, I felt like there would be more support for 3rd party plugins.
