This is an awesome poem…but its meaning doesn’t lie simply in the literal domain of what integers and irrational numbers are…
“I’m sure that I’ll always be,
a lonely number like root three”,
simply uses three as the bases for its rhyme and hence poetry and the fact that that number sits lonely below the square root sign…
“The 3 is all that’s good and right,
Why must my 3 keep outta sight,
Beneath d vicious square root sign,
I wish instead I were a nine.”
Now that a bases for the 3 has been created the 3 is the symbol for wholeness or completeness eg water can attain 3 states gas, liquid or solid, christians believe in the trinity etc so 3 is symbolic for completess.
“For 9 could thwart this evil trick,
With just some quick arithmetic.”
Quite self explanatory…the square root of 9 is a whole number integer 3.
“I know I’ll never c d sun,
As 1.7321,
Such is my reality, a sad rationalty”.
Here the 3 never sees the sun cos its beneath the square root sign and 1.7321 is the evaluated value of root 3 and thus the root sign is out making it an irrational number and this isn’t the case with the signed root 3 cos its in a rational form…hence its reality.
“When hark! What is this I see,
Another square root of 3,
As quietly cowaltzing by,
Together now we multiply,
To form a number we prefer,
Rejoicing as an integer”
Basically another lonely heart has been spotted, and together when they multiply they form an integer of the rooted number cos the self multiplication of a rooted number is the number itself hence a whole number integer 3 in this case without the root sign.
“We break free from our mortal bonds,
With the wave of magic wands.

Our square root signs become unglued,
Your love for me has been renewed.”
Basically the square root signs are no more and they are free as birds.

“I fear I’ll never see the sun as 1.7321″ This means he wont be able to see the sun because he has a square root sign over him. 1.7321 refers to the square root of 3. (Type it into a calculator.) “Together now we multiply, to form a number we prefer, rejoicing as an integer” When 2 square roots multiple (like 2 square roots of 3), the square root sign disappears and it becomes a whole number(an integer). To those of you who don’t know, a square root is like the opposite of a squared number. (Squaring a number means multiplying itself by itself. ie 2 squared = 4) this is simple middle school math. How can you not get this people? The poem is a “you complete me” type deal for those of you who don’t understand.
