Internet on the T-Mobile Dash with Unlimited T-Zones
August 2nd, 2007
I have the T-Mobile Dash and I love it, except for the fact that I can’t always access the Internet. I have the $4.99 Unlimited T-Zones plan which theoretically gives you unlimited access to webpages, but sometimes I can’t even access Google. Most of the time I can get it working again once I restart the phone, but recently I lost connection permanently. I use Google Maps constantly, and not being able to use it for a week made me consider switching to Helio. After reading forum after forum and trying many configurations I finally figured out how to get reliable internet access.
The Problem: Google maps, the Opera browser and Internet Explorer couldn’t connect to the internet. Internet Explorer would get stuck on “Opening…” I didn’t change any settings - one day everything stopped working. However, the T-Zones application had no problem connecting. It connects to the WAP network with a different browser and custom settings, which you can see by going to Options>Network.
Possible Cause: It seems that T-Mobile keeps messing with the Unlimited T-Zones package. They are able to restrict access for most phones (for example, I couldn’t use Google Maps with my old phone), but it seems that things changed when they introduced the Dash. Since Dash users tend to access the internet a lot, I’m sure T-Mobile wants to ‘encourage’ us to their more expensive plan.
The Solution That Worked For Me:
I found a lot of pages online with ’solutions’ to this problem but none worked for me. After 2 hours of messing with my phone I came across this thread. It had the settings that worked for me:
Connections->GPRS->Tmobile GPRS:
Connects to: WAP Network
Access point: wap.voicestream.com
(NOTE: A lot of other pages have the ‘Connects from’ and the ‘Connects to’ switched. It should be from WAP to The Internet)
Connections->Proxy->T-mobile:
Connects from: WAP Network
Connects to: The Internet
Proxy: 216.155.165.50:8080
Type: HTTP
Connections->Menu->Advanced:
all connections set to automatic
I can’t guarantee that this will work for you. Where you live might matter. I’m from Boston and it works fine for me, but I wasn’t able to get internet access in Pittsburgh. If you’re interested in knowing more about the Dash, visit this page . It has a lot of neat information.
